The Coat of Arms of Zulia State

Heraldical Description

The Coat of Arms of Zulia State presents a compound shape bordered in Or (yellow) divided per fess, the chief per pale. The enamels of the quarters are a tribute to the Venezolanity.

In the Dexter Quarter of the Chief enameled in Or (yellow), appears a tower in Gules (red) with masonry and door in Sable (black). The tower represents the towers on Zapara Island and the Castle on San Carlos Island which have defended since old times the entrance to the Lake, symbolizing the strength which characterizes the Zulian people at the time of defending its civic rights.

In the Sinister Quarter of the Chief enameled in Gules (red), is appraised a golden flash with nine lines with diverse sizes and directions. The flash remembers the natural phenomenon well-known as "Rayo del Catatumbo" (Catatumbo's Ray) alluding to the perennial and ardent love that the inhabitants of the region profess to the intellectual manifestations; on the one hand and by the other, its nine lines symbolizes the nine districts which originally divided the state.

The Quarter of the Base enameled in Azur (blue) loads a boat with unfolded sails in its color. The boat represents the navigation and the lacustrine commerce since colonial times have been genuine industrial activities of the region.

As external ornaments appears a sun at the west as crest. The sun at the west indicates the geographic situation of the State: the West of Venezuela.

As supports a banana tree leaf at the dexter and another one of coconut palm at the sinister jointed under the base by means of a goledn pennant which charges as mottoes the following ephemeris: "24 DE AGOSTO DE 1499" (!August 24th, 1499") and "28 DE ENERO DE 1821" ("January 28th, 1821").

The banana tree leaf remembers the fertility of the territory whereas the one of coconut palm alludes to the glory of the heroes of the Independence of Venezuela. The ephemeris respectively remember the date in which the Conqueror Alonso de Ojeda discovers the Lake of Maracaibo and the date in which the Province of Maracaibo adheres the Cause of the Independence of Venezuela.
