THE NATIONAL ARMS OF VENEZUELA 1954-2006

Heraldical Description


The Shield of Arms of the Republic of Venezuela consists in a English shape divided per fess with curved line, the chief per pale:

First Quarter or Dexter-Chief, enameled in Gules (red), contains a wheat ears bundle in Or (yellow) disposed in fan and joined by means of a pennant with enamels Or (yellow), Azure (blue) and Gules (red) on three horizontal stripes with equal size; It symbolizes the Greatness, the Faith, the Strength, the Honor, the Courage and the Intrepidity, show a gilded wheat ears bundle which represents the Union and the Wealth of the States that integrate the Republic.

Second Quarter or Sinister-Chief, enameled in Or (yellow), loads a pair of National Flags and two sabers crossed in saltire and embraced with a lance dressed with a tricolor pennant disposed in pale, all jointed by means of a laurel crown in its color; It symbolizes the Authority, the Nobility, the Magnanimity, the Power, the Love, the Sovereignty, the Splendor and the Constance, loads a panoply of arms and National flags that, as war trophies, remember the victories obtained by the Liberator Army during the War of Independence.

Third Quarter or Base, enameled in Azure (blue), presents an Argent (white) horse untamed, regardant (with the head turned to the dexter of the field) and galloping from the dexter to the sinister on a Vert (green) terrace. It symbolizes the Justice, the Perseverance, the Loyalty and the Elevation of Sights, present an Argent (white) and untamed horse, galloping freely on the plain but directing his glance towards the dexter of the field with attitude of protection and defense of which is own, for represents the freedom which Venezuelan people has reached, maintained and exported with honor.

As External Ornaments, the Coat of Arms of the Republic shows two cornucopias in Argent (white) crossed in saltire disposed in fess (horizontally) and turned downwards, spilling fruits and flowers as crest; The cornucopias symbolize the abundance of our natural resources.

An olive branch at the dexter and a royal palm branch at the sinister as supports jointed under the base of the Coat of Arms by means of pennant enameled with the national colors; The olive tree branch is symbol of peace symbol and the royal palm branch is symbol of triumph.

The mottoes and the pennant enameled with the national colors represent the Venezolanity and the national tricolour (yellow for the nation’s wealth, blue for the ocean separating Venezuela from Spain, and red for the blood and courage of the people), charging on the Azure (blue) stripe the following mottoes in golden roman capital letters:

"19 DE ABRIL DE 1810" / "INDEPENDENCIA" ( APRIL 19TH, 1810 / INDEPENDENCY), at the dexter.

"20 DE FEBRERO DE 1859 / FEDERACION" (FEBRUARY 20TH, 1859 / FEDERATION), at the sinister.

And "REPUBLICA DE VENEZUELA" (REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA), under the base.





Historical Evolution of The Coat of Arms of Venezuela

It had an informal origin on the first decade of 19th Century in the provisional seals of State product of the Declaration of Independence of Venezuela and acquires its formal heraldical configuration on 1836 as product of a Commission appointed the National Congress, which consulted Sir Robert Ker Porter, Officer of English legation in Caracas and the famous Venezuelan plastic artist Don Carmelo Fernandez arriving to the present time with slight and more than all aesthetic variations. Its present version was adopted on 1930 and ratified on 1954 by means of the Law of National Falg, Coat of Arms and Anthem” in force.
