The Coat of Arms of San Diego Municipality

Heraldical Description

San Diego is a city and civic parish, capital of San Diego Municipality. It is located to the North of Valencia Lake in Carabobo State, Venezuela. It is part of the metropolitan area of Valencia.

On 30 April 1998 a constituted jury decides favorably the creation of artist Victor Martinez as the coat of arms of the new municipality and whose description is as follows:

The Coat of Arms of San Diego Municipality consists of an Spanish field divided per pale, the dexter half, the sinister half per fess.

First Quarter: Dexter, Or (golden enamel) loads a Eagle displayed Sable (black enamel) armed and langued Gules (red enamel).

It symbolizes the former greatness of the Spanish Empire and the links with the past and refers to the pioneering founders of San Diego. The golden enamel represents the greatness, high ideals, the legitimate power and protection of God.

Second Quarter: Chief, Sinister, Azure (blue enamel) loads a Cross of Argent (silver enamel) adorned by gemstones.

It represents the initial core of the foundation of San Diego in the mid-sixteenth century, in one of the encomiendas around Valencia. The Azure (blue enamel) represents the courage and perseverance, virtues of the early pioneers and religious ones that had indoctrinated the indigenous people. The silver cross is a symbol of purity, hope, and the religion that served as a link between the two races that were united to form to San Diego. The jewels represent faith and spirit of sacrifice of the people of the valley.

Base, Sinister, Gules (red enamel) loads a key of Argent (silver enamel). It represents at the present and the future, and municipal autonomy. The red enamel (Gules) symbolizes courage, bravery and sacrifice spirit.

For a Crest, upon the shield, the sun in all its glory. It symbolizes the providence's protection, as well as dawn of a new age of freedom and progress.

As external ornaments appears two Mercury rod Or (golden enamel) crossed per saltire (golden enamel) behind the shield. They symbolize the trade, the industry and the progress.

For Supporters, dexter a stalk of sugar cane (saccharum officinarum) of lush leaves, sinester a branch of orange (Citrus Nobilis). These supports represent the hope, the peace and the fertility of the valley.

Motto: "20 de Febrero de 1694", date of its foundation; "14 de Enero de 1994", date of creation as municipality; "San Diego" — On a white enameled ribbon in the compartment below the shield with capital letters of Gules (red enamel).
